problem with sound

i recently had to reinstall my operating system (for those who dont know its the thing that really runs ur computer) and all other software was erased as well.
im not a techno wiz or anything but that shouldnt make my computer mute, i have already tried different devices but it seems to be purely a software program
i have also tried going online for help, that only confused me more because i couldn't find any of the stuff it was talking about.

Why did you need to reinstall?

my harddrive got wiped clean by a virus or something, ALL software including operating system, applications, music, etc. i had to use the reinstallation discs for another computer to reinstall windows XP and all of the other stuff along with it
